Mitigation Measures

The Confederation Bridge resurfacing project has been carefully planned to minimize disruption as much as possible while maintaining the highest standards of safety and reliability.

A range of mitigation measures are implemented throughout construction to support travellers, commercial operators, and emergency services.

Traffic Flow Management

To maintain continuous access between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick:

  • Construction is completed in staged sections of approximately 3.5 kms
  • One lane of traffic remains open at all times under normal circumstances
  • Clearly marked work zones and advance signage are in place
  • Traffic lights and bridge control personnel are deployed 24/7
  • Reduced speed limits to 60km/h at the work zone enhance safety in active zones
  • The public is asked to drive at the recommended speed limit in the work zone to avoid unnecessary delays for the public behind them
  • Members of the public should inspect their vehicles and cargo (if applicable) prior to crossing the bridge, to ensure that they are safe to operate and that there will be no issues during their travel across the bridge

The travelling public is asked to plan ahead and allow additional travel time (30-60 minutes under normal circumstances) to account for construction-related delays.

Worker & Public Safety

Safety is the highest priority for all project activities.

Measures include:

  • Clearly marked work zones
  • Speed enforcement
  • Strict on-site safety protocols

The project team is committed to protecting both workers and the travelling public.

Emergency Access

Emergency services access are maintained at all times.

Protocols are in place to ensure emergency vehicles can safely and efficiently cross the bridge during construction activities.

To ensure minimal disruption to emergency services crossing the Confederation Bridge, the public is asked to drive at the recommended speed limit in the work zone to avoid unnecessary delays for any emergency vehicles behind them.

Environmental Protection

Strait Crossing Development Inc. has integrated environmental protection in the inception of this work. Such protections include:

  • Scuppers located within the work zone are temporarily sealed to prevent any construction materials or debris from entering the Northumberland Strait
  • Millings from the existing Confederation Bridge asphalt are being reused as roadway shouldering and for other appropriate uses
  • Spill response kits are present on site
