Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Why is this project being undertaken?
The resurfacing project is part of the bridge’s long-term maintenance program. Since opening in 1997, the bridge has undergone routine inspections and maintenance, including micro-resurfacing in 2015 to preserve the driving surface. The upcoming resurfacing project represents the most significant surface renewal work undertaken since the bridge was originally constructed.
This work :
- Enables continued protection of the structural deck from ingress of water and deicing salt
- Ensures the 100 years lifespan of the bridge is met or exceeded
- Reduces the need for significant repairs in the future
- Improves driving conditions and ride quality.
How long will the project take?
Active construction is expected to be completed by the end of June 2026.
Work is completed in staged sections to maintain traffic flow. Timelines may be adjusted due to weather or operational requirements, and updates will be provided as needed.
Is the bridge operational during construction?
Yes. The bridge remains open throughout construction.
At least one lane of traffic is maintained at all times under normal circumstances. Traffic control measures and reduced speed limits are in place within work zones to ensure safety.
Emergency access is maintained at all times.
The travelling public is asked to plan ahead and allow additional travel time (30-60 minutes under normal circumstances) to account for construction-related delays.
It would be prudent to also cross the bridge outside of peak hours if possible. Peak hours are between 10AM and 4 PM.
Why is the work not being completed at night?
Work is scheduled during daylight hours for two key reasons. First, it ensures the safety of construction crews, as visibility and working conditions are significantly better during the day. Second, overnight temperature drops can lead to increased humidity and condensation, which can affect how well the new surface materials bond to the existing bridge deck. Daytime conditions provide the optimal environment for a safe and durable result.
How is the project funded? Does this affect bridge tolls?
The resurfacing project is part of the bridge’s ongoing maintenance program and is being managed as part of its long-term operational planning.
There are no changes to bridge tolls associated with this project.
Will this impact travel across the bridge?
Yes, during construction, travellers should expect delays (30-60 minutes under normal circumstances).
Work has been carefully staged to minimize disruption, and advance notice will be provided for any significant operational changes.
The longest delays will occur between 10am and 4pm. Travellers are asked to plan ahead and allow additional travel time to account for construction-related delays and if possible, travel on the Confederation Bridge outside of these peak hours.
How can I prepare for potential delays on the bridge?
To help ensure a safe and comfortable crossing, we recommend the following:
Before heading on the bridge:
- Bring water or any essentials you may need during your crossing
- Use washroom facilities in advance, as there are no stops once on the bridge
- Check your vehicle (fuel level, tires, coolant, and secure any cargo)
- Plan ahead and allow extra travel time
While on the bridge:
- Remain in your vehicle at all times
- Follow posted signage and instructions from traffic lights and bridge personnel
- Keep your focus on the road so you can respond to traffic movement
- Turnarounds are not permitted
When traffic is moving:
- Drive at the posted speed limit
- Maintain a steady speed through the work zone to help keep traffic flowing
- Avoid slowing unnecessarily, as this can cause delays for others
