About The Project
Why is this project being undertaken?
The resurfacing project is part of the bridge’s long-term maintenance program. Since opening in 1997, the bridge has undergone routine inspections and maintenance, including micro-resurfacing in 2015 to preserve the driving surface. The upcoming resurfacing project represents the most significant surface renewal work undertaken since the bridge was originally constructed.
This work will:
- Enable continued protection of the structural deck from ingress of water and deicing salt
- Ensure the 100 years lifespan of the bridge is met or exceeded
- Reduce the need for significant repairs in the future
- Improve driving conditions and ride quality.
How long will the project take?
Active construction is expected to commence in late April and be completed by the end of June 2026.
Work will be completed in staged sections to maintain traffic flow. Timelines may be adjusted due to weather or operational requirements, and updates will be provided as needed.
Is the bridge operational during construction?
Yes. The bridge will remain open throughout construction.
At least one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times under normal circumstances. Traffic control measures and reduced speed limits will be in place within work zones to ensure safety.
Emergency access will be maintained at all times.
The travelling public is asked to plan ahead and allow additional travel time (30-60 minutes under normal circumstances) to account for construction-related delays.
It would be prudent to also cross the bridge outside of peak hours if possible. Peak hours are between 10AM and 4 PM.
How is the project funded? Does this affect bridge tolls?
The resurfacing project is part of the bridge’s ongoing maintenance program and is being managed as part of its long-term operational planning.
There are no changes to bridge tolls associated with this project.
Will this impact travel across the bridge?
Yes, during construction, travellers should expect delays (30-60 minutes under normal circumstances).
Work has been carefully staged to minimize disruption, and advance notice will be provided for any significant operational changes.
The longest delays will occur between 10am and 4pm. Travellers are asked to plan ahead and allow additional travel time to account for construction-related delays and if possible, travel on the Confederation Bridge outside of these peak hours.
