Le pont arqu\u00e9 de 12,9 kilom\u00e8tres (8 miles) est le plus long pont du monde qui surplombe des eaux prises par les glaces. <span data-teams=\"true\">Vingt-sept ans apr\u00e8s sa construction, il demeure l\u2019une des plus grandes r\u00e9alisations techniques canadiennes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, un d\u00e9bat passionn\u00e9 a surgi quant au remplacement du traversier en service par un lien permanent. Les agriculteurs, les p\u00eacheurs, les exploitants d\u2019entreprises touristiques et les r\u00e9sidents de l\u2019\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard ne s\u2019entendaient pas sur la fa\u00e7on dont l\u2019acc\u00e8s \u00e0 l\u2019ann\u00e9e \u00e0 la partie continentale modifierait leur vie et leur moyen de subsistance. Finalement, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 convenu que la d\u00e9cision sans appel se prendrait \u00e0 la suite d\u2019un r\u00e9f\u00e9rendum. Le minist\u00e8re f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de Travaux publics et Services gouvernementaux Canada a s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 son mod\u00e8le de pont pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 parmi diverses propositions provenant du secteur priv\u00e9 et le 18 janvier 1988, le premier ministre Joseph Ghiz a demand\u00e9 aux habitants de l\u2019\u00cele-du-Prince-\u00c9douard de statuer par vote. Ainsi, 59,4 % des habitants de l\u2019\u00cele \u00e9taient en faveur pour un lien permanent.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s quatre ans de construction et gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 plus de 5 000 travailleurs locaux, le Pont de la Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration a \u00e9t\u00e9 ouvert \u00e0 la circulation le 31 mai 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, Strait Crossing Bridge Limited exploite le Pont de la Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration.
