Strait Crossing was awarded the 1994 Environmental Achievement Award by the Canadian Construction Association for their far-reaching and exhaustive environmental management of the project. Both design and construction methods were developed in consideration of the unique terrestrial and marine environments surrounding the project site. In cooperation with the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) of Environment Canada, Strait Crossing constructed and erected nesting platforms for osprey, an endangered bird, in Cape Jourimain National Wildlife Area (CJNWA). The nesting habitat program marks the most extensive management effort for osprey to date at the CJNWA.
Strait Crossing identified three key areas in the Northumberland Strait for its Lobster Habitat Enhancement Program. By strategically dumping dredged material in marine areas currently identified as non-productive fishery habitats, Strait Crossing established new lobster terrain and also enhanced the existing environment for other crustaceans, rock crabs and marine plants. |
"As a performer I used to dread shows on PEI because you had to line-up to get there and 'race' to the boat to get home....now I'm proud to say I live on the Island and travel from here.....Moving to Charlottetown from Moncton was really only practical because of the Confederation Bridge" Sandy Gillis (Comedian Jimmy the Janitor) |
